active handle Functional, turning handle that is used to open and close doors.

dummy handle Non-functional handle that cannot turn; decorative only.


entry handle Active handle with a key lock on the handle itself. Entry Handle

escutcheon plate Protective, decorative plate onto which the door handle is mounted.

extension Brass cylinder that you will use to extend your door handle past surface-mounted blinds. Click here to read more about the Extension.

finish Surface color of the extension or door hardware.

french doors Double doors that have glass paneling the full length of the door. French doors typically have an active and a dummy handle, though on some French doors both handles move and are considered active. French Doors

handle set Consists of two door handles: an outside handle and an inside lever. Handle Set

locking lever Handles that have a thumb turn lock on the lever itself. Inside Locking Lever

passage handle Handles that have movable levers without locks. Passage Handle

set screw Also known as a retaining screw, it is the small screw that secures the door handle to the spindle. The set screw is usually located at the base of the handle. An Allen wrench is required to tighten and loosen the set screw.

snap ring Fastener that secures the door handle to the escutcheon plate while permitting rotation. The snap ring can be found on the back of the escutcheon plate. Snap ring plyers are required to install/remove the snap ring. Snap Ring

spacer A shorter alternative to the extension; designed to extend Hoppe®, Kwikset®, and Schlage® door handles past surface-mounted blinds measuring up to 1¾ inches. Click here to read more about the Spacer.

spindle Metal rod/shaft that serves as the axle on which both handles on either side of the door turn.
